Ernie, all that info about red dye is so true! My MUA said the same thing when we were talking about red eye shadows and why MAC doesn't have any. That's why MAC (or most of the brands for that matter) don't have any red e/s.

Red dye allergy occurs when a child or adult is affected by red food coloring #2, which is also known as cochineal extract or carmine. This type of dye is processed using dried insects, particularly the cochineal bug found in the Canary Islands and South America. According to several studies, the red dye #2 is one of the most common food colorings that causes red dye allergy on children.
Another red dye is known as the FD&C red dye #40, which is used for three purposes - food, drugs and cosmetics, hence the name "FD&C". According to a survey performed by the National Academy of Sciences, the red dye #40 is the most widespread dye used by all ages.

The FD&C red dye is a member of the Azo family of colorants. Almost one million of these dyes are produced each year for various products starting from the first year it was discovered. Accounting to more than half of all the commercial dyes found in cosmetics, drugs and food, the red dye #40 produces different colors once processed.

Although the FD&C red dyes are one of the nine colors approved by the FDA, most of these dyes cause red dye allergy in hypersensitive people. Today, the Allura red from the Azo family is banned from Japan, Sweden, Austria and Norway.

However, the red coloring carmine is derived from the female Dactylopius coccus, a South and Central American insect.

Ok then it's a matter of determining which is in the mufe 92 that isn't in the mac purples. I'm fairly certain that the light pink shadow that caused me trouble was an off-brand that I had put into my palette. I'd be truly interested to know what is so unique about these two that have caused this reaction. The mufe 92 may be a matter of a higher concentration to achieve the pigmented look, the other one, well who knows. But knowing what the problematic ingredient is would certainly be helpful with future purchases.

But they have purples and pinks and reds like coppering. Mineralized red shadows. Blushes with red ingredients. So what is it that MAC isn't using that some of the others are? For the record, I've worn NYX pinks, purples and oranges and don't react to those either.

Well I think there has to be something...the MUFE 92 is the one shadow that most users complain that it stains their skin...so there has to be a high amount of dye in this shdow to create skin stains IMO

So I've got 4567584730 labelled swatches up and down my arms right now to see if anything reacts overnight.

you prolly won't see any reaction on your arm. its usually a reaction that occurs on or around the eyes, due to the mucous membranes.

My skin tone really changes from winter to summer, NW20 in winter to NC35 almost in summer. crazy
Wow, that is wild. I mostly stay the same pasty shade, I hide in the sun, it must be my inner vampire.
