Really stupid question.

ok i searched this and really didnt find an answer. i want to do more fotds but my picture taking skills arent great. your fotds always look awesome but mine dont stand out. how do you guys set your camera??? i reallllly want to know because everyday this week ive been trying to take a decent picture of my look and its just so bleh. the colors are washed out even when i dont put the flash on....thanks in advance for any advice

I've also heard of putting a tissue in over the flash to make it not wash out so much. I try not to use the flash and just use room lighting.
