Have you tried using a gray instead of a black? It also depends on your eye shape.

Its all about tightlining then blending out to a sheer color.

Just line your lashline with black- waterline, tightline everything, false lashes and then use a black as a liner and smudge it up use a medium gray and smudge it into the black and up to the crease and then use a very natural browbone color
