Too Glittery?

Don't know where to put this... it's about MAC but it's moreso about me...

I just have a question. I really can't stop thinking about this since I posted my FOtD's on that other board.

Anyway, quite a few people said that I shouldn't use such sparkley eyeshadow. Shimmery, whatever. Glittery I guess is what they said. And a lot of the girls who said that use a lot of MAC, too.

http://www.specktra.net/forum/showthread.php?t=43339

I'm really baffled. I never felt like my eyeshadow was "too sparkley" and to be honest, there isn't a lot of MAC shadows that DONT have at least a small amount of shimmer to them.

I really can't stop thinking about it and to be quite honest, my daily makeup has faltered due to this. Everytime I open up my case to get ready for work, I feel like I'm putting on my clown face and that maybe people at work or in daily life think I'm too glittery too.

here's some of the comments from that board that spawned my glittersadness

"You are really good. However - I'm really not a fan of light/frosty eyeshadows...."

"I'd like to see a picture of you in more natural makeup. The kind of makeup you've shown in those pictures is awesome (incredibly good application), but do you ever sport a more natual look (browns, nudes, etc)?"

"its all very pretty, but i like natural makeup. "

"Your application looks good no doubt, hands down to you. BUT - it's too much for me! I wouldn't go anywhere with that much eyeshadow on, LOL."

and here's the one that gave me my complex:

"Awesome skills. The only thing that I'd suggest is to not wear toooo many frost eyeshadows (from MAC) at one time. The frost e/s's have lots of glitter in them and when you (or anyone for that matter) wears too many at one time, they look like the strippers I see on Main St."

seriously. is it really that bad? i want my makeup happiness to come back

i dont want to be worried/sad everytime I open my traincase.

girl dont let it bother you much... trust me your makeup is HOTT!!! what they are saying is just in their own opinion...
i LOVE shimmery!!!
and sometimes my camera picks up more glitter than it really is... it could be the flash of your camera that is making it look different to us to what you see in the mirror...
but from these pictures your makeup is just fine! colors and everything!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
keep up the good work and dont mind what is being said. i dont think they mean it in a bad way at all!
if they said something like "I DONT like it on you at all take that ugly shit off" then you should be sad! but just do what you do...thats all i can say really

The whole idea of posting an FOTD is really to garner suggestions from other makeup fans, since we don't usually see our faults.

As suggestions go, you can either adopt them or disregard them as you see fit. I usually ask my friends for opinions about the makeup I wear because I treasure their opinion and I think they always have good advice to offer, but I don't take up their advice at times.

Not all of your makeup is that frosty, actually. You're a beautiful girl and you're really really photogenic! I love the first two pictures and the third and fourth (the dubonnet picture was a tad too sparkly, but the lipstick looks fab on you).

We're all here to learn after all! You're beautiful, remember that!

That's true too. The camera magnifies some aspects of makeup sometimes which makes it look totally different compared to real life!

I think it's the camera and I honestly think you look great. If nobody has actually told you that your makeup is too OTT in real life then I wouldn't worry about it; you look great regardless of whether your eye makeup is shimmery or not

I have certain style preferences, as do most people I would assume. If a look is appropriate (and granted, there is some level of subjectivity there) for the situation, and is well applied...who cares, really? Feedback is always something to consider if you feel like you're stuck in a rut or need some help with something, but otherwise wear what you love and what makes you happy.

As far as my own preferences go, I tend to favor natural, softly shimmery looks that look a little earthy or fey, so I'm not averse to a little glitter, though not in the usual modern, clubby or "porn-star" (I say that in a good way) style that "glitter" tends to evoke.

sometimes cameras pick up stuff that you cant really see in real life. its that damn flash sometimes!!

i like all of your looks, they are so pretty and well applied. sometimes people say things out of jealousy. i would just ignore those comments. you and your makeuyp are beautiful!

I just did a quick look thru of those FOTD that you posted. I was looking for "glitter" but honestly didn't see it. I did see Frost, but nothing glittery at all. If they were giving you a hard time for that, I honestly didn't see a problem. I liked those looks you sported. If you do use "too much glitter", then I do too because I wear frosts a lot. and I am older than you. The photos looked great to me. You were happy with them so that is all that matters.

If you don't want to wear neutrals and browns (moderation is key) then don't. Who says you have to? I honestly think they were just jealous you could rock it out. I wouldn't worry at all. If you want to seriously know if it is "wrong" go to a MAC store or counter and ask an MA.

I think you should do what you like and not worry about other people- life is too short to worry about criticism over something like the kind of makeup you prefer. I think you look adorable in your FOTDs, but seriously, your deciding factor should be what YOU like, not what other people say.

Thank you... I am really sorry, too. I feel like I'm fishing for compliments from posting 2 threads about this but I'm really not... I guess it just made me more insecure about it than I had originally thought.

I hope I get over it soon!!!

it might not be too glittery, i bet its just the flash from the camera reflecting it ! And anyways, if you like your makeup the way it is, dont change it for anyone !!!

I don't think it's OTT but i do wear brown/peach/pink e/s w/ "shimmer" everyday b/c I think it makes my eyes look alive, so I could be wrong, in which case, I'll see you on main street yeah?
thmbup.gif

I think ppl are afraid of colour & live in a very muted world, it looks nice & not too glittery (i was thinking actual glitter, heavy like you'd see for ads or something). Maybe they don't realize using browns/nudes w/ a similar finish will give the same results. i wouldn't let a few ppl on the internet stop you from wearing it if you feel comfortable in it & your friends are willing to be seen in public with you-b/c if they good friends, they will make you change if it looks bad

I wouldn't worry about it. We have gone through much more "glittery" trends than anything you wore in those FOTD - remember gel glitter that we all used to put on our face 6 or so years ago?? LOL

Don't worry - like it was mentioned above, there is a lot of reflection from the camera. Plus, these posts are one person's opinion.

Keeo your head up!

I agree with what everyone says about the flash. Also, when photos are downsized, they can end up looking a lot more shimmery/glittery than in real life. Ruby_soho was talking about this in one of her FOTD's. either way I think yours are very pretty

Don't let it make you second guess your makeup. The flash can sometimes make the make-up look different. I thought that they were all beautiful! Please don't let a few peoples comments bother you. No one here is intentionally mean and was just trying to be constructive! Keep doing your makeup the way that you like!

I don't see where anyone should negatively criticize your makeup. I saw your pictures and you are gorgeous...the colors and textures work on you (and if you're not going to wear glitter/shimmer/etc when you're young and your eyelids can tolerate it well, when the heck are you going to wear it!!). Wear what makes you happy and makes you feel beautiful, and damn everyone else!!

well i too suffered from wearing too many glittery eyeshadows (all i wore was just frost e/s on my eyelids), but seeing a lot of the girls wearing mattes or satins in the crease help with creating depth to the eyes. since mattes/satins don't have a sparkle (reflecting light), they create more of a shadow, which makes your eyes pop in my opinion. i think how the people have commented was a bit rude, but you should definitely check out a few mattes in order to try something different. i love your application in terms of the placement of the colors. =) just my 2 cents though.

Cameras with flash always pick up every bit of frost, the same as standing in the midday sun will. In day-to-day life it probably doesn't look that full-on.
Generally the rule of thumb is to keep frosts for nightwear (or only ue a single frost for daywear), as the reflectives will pick up more of the reduced light and make the eye area luminous.

If you're unsure of how much sparkle is appropriate, invest in some satins and veluxe pearls. They're shimmery but muted, so you'll evenly straddle the line between bright reflects and muted finish. They'll also add depth to your eyes - the reflections of frosts make the eye look shallow, so switching to a different finish will give your eyes depth and lustre.

It sounds like the people who are criticizing on that other forum are basing it more on what looks they prefer for themselves, and not on what looks good for you. And all of those looks are good on you, so don't even worry.
