MAC Year of the Snake Collection Discussion (February 2013)

Very beautiful Mac Shell Pearl on deeper skin tone. It's very sheer, but I strongly believe it will look beautiful on any skin tone.
Hello,

I am a NW 45 in MAC foundation. I have Shell Pearl and I was wondering how would I use this product. The SP beauty powder is very beautiful in the pan but I can't figure out how to use this. Thanks for any advice you can give (I am new found MAC makeup lover).

I tried it today after my foundation (NW 47) and I use at the top of cheek bone as a highlighter. I apply mine with the Mac 131 brush (it's a stippling brush) and it applied beautifully. The beauty of this powder it's not in face type of highlighter. Very work and day appropriate:) Let us know how it works for you! I'm liking it so far and very happy I decided to take the plunge and get it! There were no swatches on anyone with deeper complexions and I'm glad it's just not ashy! lol

Well...I didn't make it to the MAC counter today (didn't want to deal with the AG madness) but I did pick up an inexpensive duofiber fan brush to experiment with my Shell Pearl. I don't know, you guys...I just don't like it on me!

It's such a bummer because everyone else raves about it. I feel like it is just way too orange. I'm not sure if I'm going to return it (Can you return online purchases to MAC stores? Or would I have to send it back?) or gift it to my (much warmer complected) sister,

Oh well!

I'm not sure what kind of brush you use for application. But I do believe the type of brush (not brand) you are using can alter the outcome of your finish. I find the stippling brushes are the best for light color highlighters on deeper skin tones:)

I like Shell Pearl when I'm out in the sun. It almost doesn't show up on me indoors (NC30) unless if you look up close but it's perfect amount of sheen and highlight outdoors. Whisper of Gilt and other EDSFs on the other hand show up beautiful when you're indoors and in artificial light but when you go out in the sun, the micro shimmers look very obvious. Not disco-ball type glitter/sparkles but tinier and metallic-like reflects. I like Shell Pearl for outdoors and office/meetings environment and EDSF for indoor events or if you're going for a more reflective outdoor look.

Sorry to hear you're not liking SP! To answer your question, unfortunately MAC stores can't take returns from online orders. Products ordered online have to be returned through the mail. It would certainly be easier to gift it to your sister, but if you want a few dollars back, then send it back. Or sell/swap it on this site. I love MAC, but they do make returns difficult sometimes...

I'm wearing Shell Pearl again today - it's beautiful. It often takes me a couple of wearings to figure out what an optimal application is for me with a particular product, and I feel like I'm there with SP. I'm not someone who likes strong sheen (or rather, my skin no longer does), so I apply SP with my 184 just along the cheekbones. It does leave faint colour, but it doesn't pull remotely orange on me. If anything, it's pinker than most of my other highlighters. I'm wearing it today with Deep Throat - it's a gorgeous combination and one I'd be comfortable wearing to work.

Thanks again for the reco, Erine. I think I probably have too many highlighters at this point, but this is one I know I'll wear frequently. :)

I picked up just one item- Shell Pearl. It's such a beautiful highlighter for when I want a more subtle glow. It brightens up my face nicely and makes me look less sleep deprived :p

I tried mine because I was afraid it may turn orange on me. The Lorac Unzipped palette turns orange on me for some reason. I tried to build SP up to see if it would turn orange on me and it never did. Maybe you have a bad one?

You know...I thought about that. Especially since a few other girls with the same coloring as me loved it. I just don't see how it could be so pigmented on me and light and fresh on everyone else...Oh well, You can't win them all!

I was wondering if someone could swatch Once Upon a Time next to Preferred Blonde from the Marilyn Collection. Are they very similar?

They are both seem champagne colored and both Veluxe Pearl. Just from looking at swatches online, it seems like Once Upon a Time may be a bit darker.

Anyone have input?

Here's a quick comparison pic/swatch, sorry it's just from my phone and they are very light colors on my NC25ish skin. OUAT is darker, golden and shimmery and PB is a light beigey pearl with an almost metallic like sparkle. OUAT is darker than it looks in the first pic. Hope that helps.

Thank you so much!!!! This was very helpful. I think I am going to try it tomorrow and see how it works for me. I love the look of it and hopefully I can pull it off right.

I don't have the 130. I have the 187 and I was interested in buying MACs 129 or 116 but wasn't sure if I really needed those brushes. But I will try the 187. Thanks a bunch for all your help.

I would at least get the Mac 129! I have both the 129 and 116, but they are great blush brushes:) I use my 187 for liquid foundation (airbrush finish) and love it to death! The Mac 131 brush(limited edition) is not as wide as the 187 but not as small as the 188! It's kind of hard to describe...it's just the perfect brush for highlighters and make the finishes very day time appropriate. I know the shell pearl will work for you, if it works on my nw47 skin. You are welcome as well.

Aargh! I am dithering!

I thought i wanted Shell Pearl after seeing swatches from times past. I was sure i didn't want Flatter Me or Cream Soda (from Archie's Girls). Now i am torn again!

I have 15-20 neutral coloring, so i can wear slightly warm or slight cool colors well, and i have a personal preference for very violet tones.

Among my relatively recent collection of blushes / highlighters i have:
Pearlmatte Face Powder - Flower Fantasy
Mineralize Skinfinish - Redhead
Mineralize Skinfinish - Semi Precious Rose Quartz
Mineralize Skinfinish - Light Year
Mineralize Blush - Solar Ray
NARS Blush - Deep Throat
NARS Blush - Luster

So i'm concerned about redundancy. I wear Redhead and Deep Throat the most, Luster and Light Year next, the others less often. Would Shell Pearl or Flatter Me or Cream Soda really provide something i'm missing? Or would any be close to what i already have?
