I've seen people do almost a full face at Sephora with the testers and I get thoroughly grossed out.
And they don't cut wands off either! No way I'd every try anything on at sephora. Ever!
with everyone that talking about drugstore make up it makes me not want to buy the unsealed makeup  .
Obviously certain things can be sanitized, but you shouldn't have to sanitize something you buy! Thankfully some things you can tell if they've been used or not-lipsticks and pencils. But as for glosses, mascaras or foundations-if there's no seal, no way!

I know! When I go to sephora on the weekend, it's a mad house full of people doing their full makeup. That's why I don't feel bad about buying online and returning it if it doesn't work for me. If they wanted to discourage returns, they would have to make sure to clean up their testers or I won't be buying from them.

I was not aware. I work in retail, so I always try to go when I know it'll be slow. I'm so glad I've only ever swatched on the back of my hand. Where I used to work they had a pop-up MAC counter that wasn't always manned. My coworker and I noticed that every morning, like clockwork, one woman (possibly homeless, but definitly shabby looking) would come through and makeup her whole face. Then, leave. My coworker pointed her out to me and even though she was using some of the applicators she was still really getting into all the products and there wasn't anyone to know what needed cleaning because there was no one staffed there.

i was at walgreens yesterday and they were just putting out a display from maybelline.the purple is color sensational in mirrored plum.it makes me think of a drugstore version of heroine lipglass..what do you think?its gorgeous either way!

ok, i got it too work!! lol

swatches are strong woman on top, playtime, outrageously fun, daddys little girl, then the maybelline gloss.its gorgeous..heroine like??

Many brands have a sort of clear plastic with a perforated opening snugly around the caps on their products, so you can definitely tell if they're still properly sealed. It isn't the drug stores that put them on there.

But some brands do not seal their products. And some are major brands, although i forget which. As for minor brands, Milani doesn't seal, so it's with fear and loathing that i would buy a Milani gloss.

High end stores have testers - sephora, good department stores, specialty shops.

ULTA has testers for higher end products, but not for the "drug store" brands they also carry.

Target, sort of a discount dept. store, has testers for a very few brands. Pixi, a UK brand sold at Target, does. So does NP Set, Australian Napoleon Perdis low end brand. It's the brand that provides the testers and the displays to hold them, and the US "drug store" brands don't.

Drugstores (Walgreens, CVS, Rite Aid, etc.) never have testers, in my experience. I remember when there were actual employees at a counter in the cosmetics aisle of drugstores, and it wasn't all that long ago.

Yeah, and just think how many people have been getting into those testers. I mean, when testers have been tested, they often have e. coli, herpes, and staph in them. Eeeeew.

If you have a SA help you, she will clean a lipstick, although many people just swipe the testers on their lips and put them back on the shelf. And glosses, mascaras, foundations - anything liquid or cream - have had people putting them on their lips, putting them in their eyes, and sticking their fingers into the into them without using disposable wands. I will test them on my arm or hand, but NEVER on my face. Even pressed powders can can get pretty gross - i confess i often swipe colors with my fingers, but i also clean my fingers off with the cleaning products at the ends of some aisles; but sometimes the powders are filthy and have other colors mixed into them.

At least sephora has a good return policy.

"A study conducted by Dr. Elizabeth Brooks, a biological sciences professor at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, revealed that the percentage of tainted tester makeup--when analyzed on Saturdays, the business shopping day of the week--was a shocking 100%.
"We went to department stores, specialty stores, drugstores--everywhere. Wherever you see E. coli, you should just think 'E. coli equals feces.' That means someone went to the bathroom, didn't wash their hands and then stuck their fingers in that"

The tests were conducted in several malls. While this was reported 2-1/2 years ago, i doubt there's been any significant improvement since then.

There is usually a Walgreens beauty employee at the one I frequent. We are on friendly terms. She always asks me beauty questions, because I keep up with new drugstore releases, and am always in there checking out the new displays.

Both of the walgreens near me have a makeup counter employee also. One of them is so super helpful and always giving me coupons for my purchases if she has them. I am sure she is there mostly as a shoplifting deterrent, but it's nice to have someone to answer questions, offer suggestions, and deter people from testing the products! Yuck!!!!

The one exception to this that I have seen is L'Oreal liquid foundations. They usually do have clearly marked testers available.

i have also seen girls put lipgloss from tubes in sephora. Should they not cut of the applicator.
They don't cut off the wands because they don't have disposables for all the different kinds of wands for customers to see. I mentioned this to a former coworker who left to go work at sephora and that's what she was told. They can easily make a wand displayer like mac has with their mascaras. It's simple. That's one reason i could never work for sephora. Sanitation is a MUST! And when you leave wands attached, you can't even guarantee 50% sanitiation! :nope:
Doesn't Sephora provide samples directly from its testers?
So does MAC.

Hello ladies! I've been MIA for a minute. I just started my first job at a hospital as a Sterile Processing Tech so I've been very busy. Happy to say since I do have this job I will be more than able to afford this collection!!
