I posted my makeup collection on YouTube recently. I think I will just copy and paste some of the information from the sidebar here, since that pretty much encompasses my opinion on it.
"I don't understand why people are so OFFENDED by makeup collection videos. If you don't want to watch it, there should be a little red square or circle at the top of your web browser, and if you click that, you will close this window. Nobody is holding a gun to your head and making you watch this video.
Now, I think what really "bothers" people is the idea that I've spent thousands and thousands of dollars on this stuff, but I "never use it." First of all, if OTHER people HAVE spent thousands and thousands of dollars on their makeup, that's their business and their money.
Secondly, to the people who freak out because "make-up is not a necessity:" if you are on YouTube, there's a good chance that you own a computer and have internet access. Think about that.
Thirdly, lots of people buy stuff that's expensive or that they don't use every day. Video gamers don't play all of their $50-a-piece games every day. Plenty of people buy $20,000 cars when a $10,000 car will do the same damn thing. Lots of people have cellphones, more than one pair of shoes, a television, tons and tons of books...people who love make-up are not the only people who spend money, and people who love make-up do spend money on other things.
On a slightly less bitchy note, I think a lot of people overestimate the cost of my makeup collection. SOME people have spent thousands and thousands of dollars on their collections, but I am not one of them. I would say about 2/3 of my makeup cost me absolutely nothing. I got it from friends or family, people sent it to me when they didn't want it, it was free, I had a gift card...so on and so on. The other 1/3, I paid maybe $500 for; that would be primarily my pigments, I bought almost all of those myself. I am really thrifty and I hate to waste things, so that $500 is about 5+ years of saving my pocket cash, working REALLY hard, looking for sales or the best product for the lowest price, so on and so on. My parents didn't pay for it, it's my money that I earned; also, no, I am not taking money that should go to stuff like my water bill or my education and buying lipstick with it. That's really not how it works.
By the way, I do use stuff up. Quite often. I've had to buy second copies of a decent number of things because I used my first tube or container of that product up. And again, I am a total cheapskate; I'm not going to waste money on something I won't use just so I can "brag."
In summary: I worked really hard and saved up for my iPod, which I've had for 3 years--again, I don't waste things--and it cost me about $500, including the warranty, the wall charger, and the protective covers I use. My dad bought me a nice hard case as a gift. Nobody demonizes me for spending $500 of my money on an iPod. Just sayin'."
