I found it odd that they had "midi length" and they were above the knee!

Baaaaack in the ooooold days, midi length was between the knees and the ankles.

Or maybe i'm just too old to understand...

Waaaay baaaack then, there were
mini - above the knee
midi - between knees and ankles
and
maxi - at the ankles
At first minis were just at the top of the knee cap, but they got pretty short pretty fast.

What bothers me a bit are the teeny tiny "skirts" of knit fabric that pretty much just cover the mons and the butt cheeks and the girls wearing them spend a lot of time pulling on them to make sure they are below their butt cheeks. If they are so self-conscious in them, maybe they should wear something a couple inches longer... It isn't so much that they're short The hookers in 1970s NYC wore them that short, so i've seen it before. No, it's the constant butt gripping and tugging that makes the women in them look uncomfortable

Nowadays just above the knee or to the knee is considered midi length .

Thanks, @Kierra . Because i play music sitting on the floor, i tend to wear pants or long skirts (bottom of calf or to ankle). In Balinese culture it is very inappropriate for a woman to show her thighs, and definitely no underpanty exposure

i have zero problem wearing a super short skirt - it only feels like your butt is hanging out, but no one can actually see anything (or at least anything critical).

Just don't bend over to pick anything up.

I'm short but have some good legs so there are quite a repertoire of short skirts in my closet. If I'm walking around and feel a bit of a breeze starting to float in, I mostly just suck in my stomach and scoot in my butt muscles at the same time and hope everything drops back into place LOL.

Hey you were doing a good deed giving all those old dudes in the nursing home a little flash - just as long as none of them had accidental heart failure over it.

Me too, haha! I think the current terminology is "calf length" or "tea length" but it doesn't seem to be too popular these days outside the high fashion world, as liba said. But I'm the odd one wearing a midi/tea-length vintage dress with a big petticoat underneath here on casual Friday, so you probably shouldn't be asking me for opinions on current fashion.

With my body shape minis look too revealing/sexual for my liking.. If that makes sense.. They look fantastic on other people and I wish I could wear them but I don't like them on me. And they tend to hike up more than other lengths when I walk. I've actually bought 3 calf length skirts this season! I love them! Maybe they're making a comeback? I love the dresses Joan from Mad Men has.. if I could have any character's closet it would be hers.

Minis are sexy - there's not much way around that.

As for the calf length skirts, sf you want one with a 50's rockabilly vibe, they're finally back out there - the rockabilly and tiki scenes are HUGE…bigger than goth now, it seems. Early 60's Mad Men style is sort of creeping back in too, but you don't see as many gals wearing it - you need to be pretty committed to wear pencil skirts - not so easy to walk in, hehe. I bet movies like American Hustle will influence things and we'll see some more 70's disco era style mid-length dresses for fall or for next year too.

Maybe eventually we'll get some that are more on the minimalist, architectural end of the spectrum. That's what I want the most for myself, because I still have tons of original 50's, 60's and 70's clothes that I thrift shopped for back in the 80's when no one wanted them.

Lmao yea shes the type to stalk sites for the sales and snags them up quick before they sell out. Kinda like we do when mac collections are coming out lmfao The most i would pay for a plain t shirt would be $25 i think. Depending on the material and cut but like my boyfriend says, we girls are lucky cuz we can buy $10 dollar maxis and call it a day lmao. I recently bought wide legged pants for $17 at forever 21. Me too! People would always ask me why I didn't just wear casual clothes and is tell them it was because I felt more comfortable, more like myself, when I was dressy.

All I keep reading in fashion magazines is that mid-length skirts are back in a huge way, so it's bound to filter through to more mass styles soon. I know H&M has a bunch of mid length options out this season, including both pencil skirts and fuller tea skirt types. I'm thrilled to see those come back. I love minis, but I find that you can have a bolder piece- more detailing, a more interesting pattern, etc, when there's more fabric.

i was also under the impression that midi was below the knee, maxi was below, and mini was above! a few years ago, i worked in a popular clothing store.... (two letters joined by an ampersand... you can guess...) people used to come in to buy clothes for clubbing (because it was in a city with a lot of clubs).... a lot of them purchased those types of skirts in sizes way too small because they stretched. i couldn't wear them because i am simply not comfortable in something like that- i would be yanking and pulling because 1. its skin tight, and 2. it barely covers the front when someone buys it in that small of a size!! i saw people buy a lot of weird things. when i was working in the fitting room, a girl came out of one of the rooms to ask my opinion on a blazer. it was lace and gray and clasped in the front. she was wearing nothing under it. 'what do you think?' she asked. 'well what will you wear it with?' i asked. her: 'a mini skirt and glittery pumps' me: 'what kind of shirt' her: 'oh just the blazer. no shirt. i'm wearng it clubbing' NOT EVEN A BRA

I thought about that when I saw American Hustle, too. It was such a great movie that I can see it influencing some fashion. People tend to think of the "70's as bad fashion-wise, but there were some good things, too. You are so smart to have held on to all of those clothes, Liba. I'll bet you have a great wardrobe.

Wow. Things have definitely changed since I was a club girl. Then again, I don't even remember what I wore. But definitely not see-through lace with no bra. I can do low cut blouses but I don't think I'd be comfortable with that. I used to wear short skirts but I wouldn't even want to now. I am all about the maxi length these days! I imagine that was a very interesting job.
