Dear HerGreyness, there are quite a few cheesy sites like allglam, sad to say. Now that MAC has buckled down on advance info, pictures are in even greater demand and so, obviously something a sleazy aggregator site would want to get their hands on to sleazily bump up their traffic.
My best advice to you if you want to keep posting pix to your loyal fans here at specktra without getting preyed upon by random sites, in order of importance:
1) Only post them in the main collection threads. If your pictures get put in the swatch threads, it just makes it easier for them to be found and snagged by outsiders. If it was me, I wouldn't let them be posted there. Sure, this is less convenient for people who want to refer back to them, but I think hardcore specktrettes won't have a problem going back through the threads to find your posts.
2) Watermark them, before someone else (like allglam) does. This can be a bit of a pain, but maybe photobucket has some quickie way of tagging all your pictures with a watermark?
3) Call me a fascist, but I wouldn't let other sites link to your (watermarked) photos even if they give you a credit for them - 9 times out of 10 they are looking for easy ways to generate traffic for their sites and are just profiting off of your hard work. I saw some other site that used your Peacocky pictures - they gave you credit, but they still titled the post something along the lines of "Latest Sneak Peek of Peacocky", as if they had the personal hookup, which they do not. Honestly, that burned me up when I saw it.
It sucks trying to be enthusiastic about a subject you love when there are so many folks just trying to make a quick buck on the internet. I'm not sure if photobucket has settings to deny hotlinking directly to your photos from outside sources, or denying direct downloads of anything other than thumbnail sizes, but check and see - because all of that will also help keep the vultures out while still leaving yourself free to share with people who appreciate your hard work.
Anyhow, I hope it all works out. It's so damn hard to be a happy-go-lucky idealist who just wants to share without being taken advantage of nowadays.
