YouTube - Miss California's Miss Usa 2009 Speech! OUCH!

i don't believe the girl is wrong for her beliefs but i do believe she should have answered that a little differently. I mean he wasn't asking her for her personal beliefs on same-sex marriage. It was a question of should ALL states legalize it. i understand that constitutes using some personal beliefs to answer the question but i don't think i'm going to far with saying that she offended the gay community in a nice way....

Don't their Coaches (or whatever they have) tell them "Don't use the words "Um or Uh constantly? "

and they are always redundant as well " I think that I believe that I think"

I know they are nervous and are probably thinking WAAY too far into things, "Oh crap what did they tell me to say? ahh how to I answer correctly" and it comes out all a mess.

That was horrible, just look at the disappointment in that judges face. She should have just answered the question yes or no. Poor girl is never gonna hear the end of that.

What I want to know is what is "opposite marriage" ? I'm sure it was nerves, but as some of you have said, why aren't the contestants coached for these types of things at a stronger level??

I smiled, but I also felt so sorry for her...It must be a massive amount of pressure to be up there, knowing winning is based on your every word, step, pose, outfit....you rehearse it over and over and then when it's your turn you go Stupid Blank. What a shame...she was beautiful however.

Honestly, I didn't find her answer off putting at all, and felt she did the best at actually answering the question given to her. And I give her props on stating her personal feeling and not just what she thinks people want to her. But overall, most of the chicks didn't do that well in the question category. I'm sure there's a reason they save it for last.

I was more interested in Miss Arizona's answer actually seeing as it didn't even answer the damn question they asked her. Let me paraphrase for you:

Keenan: Do you think the US should try to move towards universal healthcare? Why or why not?

Miss Arizona: No matter who or where you are, it's all a matter of integrity.

really Miss Arizona? Is that what you really think about universal healthcare?

at first I thought.. ok she should not have mentioned her personal opinion.

But after watching it a second time-- if she spoke like an educated person giving an educated answer..what she said wouldn't have sounded so STUPID. You can say things that some people may not agree with.. but you can say it in a way that doesn't make you sound so ignorant.
What country is her country (is her country different from the country of other Americans?) and WTF is an opposite marriage? idiot. I am sorry.
She's supposed to be a role model?

Not that I take these shows seriously anyway....but you have 2 ears and 1 mouth for a reason. It's not about your personal beliefs, how you were raised, your mama 'n 'em....It's a yes or no question that she didn't even answer. I found it laughable that she professed her love for this country and freedom, but then talked about restrictions of other Americans.

Fine, maybe you yourself are not in favor of gay marrage. But like Perez said (afterwards) saying simply "I don't believe in it, its not how i was raised" Alienates a lot of Americans, Americans who you are supposed to be representing.
There is a diplomatic way to answer a question like this.

Also, she started off saying that she thinks its great that she lives in a country where you can choose "gay marriage or opposite marriage". WRONG! you can only choose in like 4-5 states. As Miss California she shoudl def. know that, considering she probably voted yes on Prop 8!

Also, im going to let my bf know we are getting opposite married. Maybe if i use that wording, i can trick him into giving me a ring
