Whilst sitting here browsing different forums I discovered something very abnormal... I was rubbing my knee for whatever reason and felt a small "ball". Puzzled, I took a closer look and ran my finger over the area and the "ball" moved! Normally something like that would completely freak me out but I found myself oddly disturbed AND intrigued all at the same time.

I ran over to my boyfriend and made him feel it, therein creeping him out. He refused to have anything to do with the matter shortly after, so I sat on the floor next to him and kept repeating how gross and cool it was. I was completely perplexed as to what was in my knee.

That's when my room mate informed me that it was more than likely a cartilage shard. Apparently cartilage can "tear" off and if it rubs against your muscle enough it can form a ball. I wasn't aware of this and felt fairly stupid. I'm still not entirely sure if it is cartilage, but it makes sense. I think.

Maybe this is a sign that I should take better care of my knees and stop running them into things 5000000 times a day?

If anyone actually read through that, I applaud you. I have a knack for making long stories short, and felt the need to share my "ball" moving experience!

Just to be on the safe side you should get a doctor to check it out. It's unlikely to be anything major but knee problems can be difficult to deal with if left too long. One of my college friends had such bad knees she had to have both kneecaps removed to solve the problem (although her problem is very rare). She made a pair of earrings out of the kneecaps

Bad knees run in my family, unfortunately. My grandfather had both of his replaced as well, so I'm waiting for mine to go out. I don't think it's anything too major, and seeing as how I have no health insurance, I'll wait until it's absolutely neccessary.

But um, kneecap earrings? Please explain... :|

They're large but kneecaps are incredibly light weight. Hang on, I'll just go weigh one. Very easy to screw an eyelet into and use with a pair of earrings

OK - an adult male left kneecap weighs about 10.8g or 0.38oz when dry. That's only just over the weight of two US nickel coins which together weight 10.0g or 0.32oz.

caffn8me, I went to push the "thanks" button for the amusing, yet disturbing notion of kneecap earrings. But, really, we need an "ew gross" button!

Edit: was your friend male then, or do you just have a stack of these laying around?

You want me to tell you about the bodies? If I told you that I'd have to kill you :shedevil:

Seriously though, many years ago I was a medical student and was given the bones by an ambulance unit that no longer needed them in teaching. The half skeleton dates back to Victorian times and comes in a wonderful wooden box. A half skeleton has one of every bone in the body so you can't make two half skeletons from a whole skeleton.

Because you get one of each individual bone so bones that lie down the midline only occur once in a skeleton - like the sternum or the vertebrae. A full skull is also supplied with a half skeleton.
