Personally I don't think it was a big deal. He obviously thought it was Bristol who was in New York, not the 14 year old. The jokes weren't in good taste, no, but he apologized to everyone involved multiple times and that's it, it's done with.

But it's gonna happen- Bristol (who's an adult) is very much in the spotlight and Palin has to expect some jokes being made. She definitely overreacted- she said jokes like his (about statutory rape??) "contribute to the atrociously high rate of sexual exploitation of minors by older men."
Oh, okay then.
