MAC and Gareth Pugh Discussion

Woohoo - got my haul today!!!!

I was expecting to love this collection, but I was more in love finally checking it out than expected. Certainly not a collection for everyone, but if you are an old goth lady of a certain age or just like the idea of being in a techno-romantic couture dream, the extra expense won't seem too bad for the exceptional items.

First off, what I skipped:

The pigments - I did like the texture on both of them, which was exceptionally smooth and soft, but I didn't like the jars they came in and I felt like the colors were not very unique. You could easily get away with substituting Bloodline or Winterized for Deceit and Fresh Ice or Hold That Pose or the white or silver in the current blue crushed metal stack for Guise. They're not exact dupes, but you won't be too off base.

Strada - It was VERY pale. I could hardly see it on me and I'm at my palest for the year right now (I actually bought a bottle of Matchmaster foundation in 1.0, instead of 1.5, that's how light I am now between not getting any sun for a few months and using this amazing stuff the past month: http://caneandaustin.com/main/content/retexturizing-treatment-pads - my skin's starting to get back to the snow white it used to be years ago - call me pleased) Anyhow, back to Strada - I honestly couldn't tell the difference between it and the natural color of my cheeks. I think it would only work if you have completely covered up your natural cheek color with a full coverage foundation, or if you have zero natural cheek color, or finally, if you have skin that's quite dark and want a pale color that will look pretty and pale without being ashen - I think this formula will be good for that because it's exceptionally soft and silky. 'Still was a pass for me for the price and the kind of weird tiny box it came in. I'd say if the color works well for you, the box might be nice for keeping tiny earrings or other little treasures once you're done with the blush, but it's not a size or shape that matches any other MAC product I can think of, so not re-usable in that sense.

For $75, that makeup bag should have been real leather, or at least leather trim. The interior layout of the bag was actually really functional and very desirable, but not for that price. It's definitely a Pugh bag - his regular bags look the same and I'm sure go for at least $800 + but still, bag looked cheap-ish. The kabuki brush was very soft and perfectly constructed so the dome was perfectly even without a hair out of place, but was rather small sized and I didn't care for the square base. I'd take my angled duo-fiber Semi-Precious kabuki over this one any day. The Metal-X shadows hadn't come in - I was really curious about those, but no luck for now.
Maybe it's just me, but I would not expect real leather in a $75 designer bag. Given the usual price tag of GP products, I did not anticipate a large MU bag nor real leather/trim, but I am pleased that the interior life of the bag is awesome. Actually, I hope that future bags will have more of this type of layout that helps to have MU organized.

I hope you get to try out the Metal X soon. I definitely need a BU of Ardent. When I got mine a few weeks ago, I did not realize that there might be a delay with the online shop, thus I hope they will stock them soon.

What I got....with excess zeal:

Nail Polish - Hyper is fantastic - maybe there are dupes out there for it, but I haven't seen them. Vibrant and glowing while still somehow being rather subtle and not garish.I bought it. 'Held off on Ascension and Inert until I could compare them to the Deborah Lippmann Wicked Game and to Light Affair from Love Lace collection, Dec '09. How are the comparisons? Ascension vs. Wicked Game: very very close, Ascension is a touch more vibrant with a bit pinker highlight - it's a bit thicker than the Lippmann one, which is probably why. The Lippmann one is sheerer - you will need 1-2 more coats to get the same result as the MAC color, but it's also smoother without any noticeable streaks, even while slapping it on haphazardly - i'm sure that's the Lippmann brush and the thinner consistency. It's a great color, so it's worth it to get if from either brand, but I'd go with Wicked Game since it's cheaper, but the MAC version beats the Lippmann on purely glossiness and vibrancy alone, but just barely. Inert is very tempting - it's a few tones deeper than Light Affair and reads with a bit less purple than Light Affair. It's certainly one of the best of these grey/taupe/mauve weird neutrals that have been floating around - the application is very smooth and easy and you only need 1 coat for it to be opaque. It's not super glossy either, which is pretty cool - this would be nice on its own without a top coat. I'm not sure if I will splurge on it, but that's only because I have plenty of Light Affair still. LA is a color I get tons of compliments on, though and one of my favorite MAC polishes, so Inert would be a decent replacement. Essie does some colors like these but none of them are as subtle and sophisticated as either LA or Inert, so take that as you will, for the $.

Elude BP - I held off on Snowglobe on the chance I'd prefer Elude. Was I right to do this? YES RESOUNDINGLY. Would everyone be right to do this? Nope. Here are my criteria for it being worth $60 smackeroos for you:
#1 - Doesn't come with a refill, but the compact is reusable. There's a tiny button you can depress and the whole thing will open up, ready to accept a new standard powder pan. We tested the size, regular powder pan will work just fine. I'll have to fiddle with depotting, but I'll be able to get my Careblend powder in there for the future.

#2 - This is the most desirable piece from a packaging standpoint - it's weighty and feels more like jewelry than most other powder compacts. Even some of the fancy Guerlain compacts feel cheaper than this one. I loved the Art Deco/Cyber style and it's very recognizably Gareth Pugh. Very minimalist, but feels great. It's what I'd call private luxury - only you will know what you have when you pick it up or open it. Not for those who love frilly and feminine or ornate and baroque.

#3 - The BP itself is f-king beautiful. I'm not a huge BP fan - I usually find them a little too powdery on my skin. This one is smooooooooth like butter, though. Very soft in the pan, but no powdery residue on application, even with an overloaded brush. It does not have sheen to the degree that Snowglobe does, not by a long shot. That one's a straight up highlighter compared to Elude. Rather, it has an extremely subtle, elegant texture that I can only compare to an old Shu Uemura traditional kabuki rice powder I used to have in the 90s. It's not a glow or a sheen, it's more of a porcelain bisque effect. Even the Careblend powder looks a bit more light reflective than Elude, but Elude isn't matte either. It's got more coverage than Careblend, I'd say roughly 30% more, perhaps 25%. Compared to Careblend in Light, Elude is also more purely neutral in color. Careblend has more pink to it, while Elude is more yellow. This leads to a neutralizing effect - it will make your skin look pale white, but due to erasing all the pink tones on your face, rather than from adding a white layer, so it doesn't look ghostly. This will be an awesome look for anyone with NC or especially NW15 and lighter. Like I said, I'm now at Matchmaster 1.0 and this powder was amazing on, without any foundation and just sick, insane gorgeous over the foundation. Can anyone darker than NC15 wear Elude? Not too sure, but it's worth a test if you're in store, since the texture is very fine. Maybe you'll get an interesting effect that's more like a softening and neutralizing. Or it'll be ashy as hell - wish I could be more helpful on this, but just the fact that I think it has potential NOT to be ashy shows what an unusual effect this one has. Traditional japanese rice powder isn't terribly long lasting and is a bit of a bitch to apply thinly and evenly without a lot of buffing. Elude will give you all of that without all the effort and light up your face without a trace of sheen while still not being matte. If you don't look good in matte powder, you may need to be careful and moisturize well before using Elude, if you're not also wearing foundation.

#4 - Would you like to be Cyber Snow White Noise? Yes/No. Interested in a powder that's more bad ass than that Chanel holiday one? Yes? I did not feel one iota of remorse over spending the big bucks on this powder. Back in my youth, I wouldn't have even looked at a face powder unless it gave me this exact look and I never had one I remotely liked other than that Shu Uemura. This one's better by far. I don't have a good set up to do really great photos, but if I have time to play around, I could try to do some face shots with the same lipstick but one with bare skin and one with Elude and maybe one with Elude + foundation. This is the only way to properly capture what's up with Elude in a photo.

I'll start a new post to talk about the lipsticks and glosses AND THE LASHES <3 (I got 2 pairs of those babies!!!)
oh my! i think you just sold me on Elude! Do you think it would look ok on me - i'm nc20 (perhaps slightly lighter at this time of year) and have very blonde hair... well heck you should know what i look like by now! :p

OMG Liba this review had me drooling. I am so excited to hear your review especially of Elude. I am NW15/N2 with newly dyed ruby locks and green eyes. I wear Matchmaster in 1.0. In the winter time I wear Ben Nye foundation in Geisha. I can't wait to get my hands on this compact. I wish it had a refill like the previous years have done but maybe I can depot Snowglobe into it.

Still waiting for the GP Metal X shadows. I have been trying to hold off on ordering until those come in. Has anyone heard why they are delayed? MAC Guy, did you get yours at a Pro Store?

Uh-oh! I don't want to start an irrational Elude craze here!
holysheep.gif
It's an expensive and extreme product and from what Ansimi was saying, not even workable on every pale skin tone. My best advice is don't get it unless you can try it in person first or you are 100% down with the goth look. I'm saying that from the standpoint of if you return it, they have to toss it out, thus depriving someone who might have really wanted it, since there are obviously very limited quantities. Also you know me....I'm your friendly anti-enabler!

OK - Here's the Elude comparison!

This is in a sunny room, but still with flash. Fresh washed skin with moisturizer and that's it:

And here's same room, same light conditions. Elude applied with a 131 all over the face, nothing else.

Stunning - I love it! Plus it photographs great because it's barely light reflective! I dunno, I might need to be like Mac-Guy and buy backups!

Oh man, that is gorgeous, your review was tempting enough! if Elude is still online when I have some money then I think I'll have to pick it up, but I'll let the fates decide. I think it would look amazing with the Black Knight lippie I just ordered though. I'll feel like a goth MAC princess

Time to discuss the lip products.

BTW, can I just say again how thrilled I am with Elude. I've worn it all day without any fading or change in finish and it doesn't feel heavy on the skin. I'm beginning to think that I'm going to have to back it up whether I like it or not, because I don't think this shade/finish is going to come back any time soon. I was using MSF natural for a more formal look than Careblend, but less formal than wearing foundation. I think I'm going to have to switch to Elude, at least for my winter skin - it's either this or Truth & Light MCLP and of course Truth & Light is very glowy and you have to be careful applying it or it looks powdery. Elude for sure if you're going to be taking photos!!!! (Have you guys figured out yet that I like the lowest-work face products possible and refuse to wear blot powder or finishing powder? :p)

OK, lippie time.

First off, I don't know what crack Temptalia was smoking when she tested the lipsticks. Fervent, in particular, is the opposite of drying. I wore it all day yesterday and my lips were soft and moist feeling at night, as if I hadn't worn any lipstick at all and had just been au naturelle. If this is going to be a new formula for MAC, I definitely approve, since I don't feel like any of their other lipsticks have any skincare benefit qualities, even the Sheen Supremes.

Fervent is a bit of a surprise, texture-wise. It's very similar to the finish on the Lustres from Semi-Precious, but perhaps even a bit glossier, but it's not as moist as the Sheen Supremes. This forced me to do a double take trying to apply it. Slathering it on is a recipe for disaster. Patting it on isn't quite enough either. Musky Amethyst was drier but definitely easier to apply. I found the best way was to pat it on from the tube, let it sit for a minute, being careful about not closing your mouth (a la the complicated way you have to apply Potent Fig mattene), then give it another slick from the tube after it's set. It was not as blue purple as I wanted it to be on my lips and I was almost going to skip it entirely, but then I put Outrage over it and it was love. This combo is more gorgeous and sexy than my previous favorite lipstick/gloss combo of 2011, which is One of a Kind l/s + Looks Like Sin c/s/g. Holy crap, I said "stick it in the pile" without another second's hesitation. For all of you who have not discovered the gorgeous sultriness of that Semi-Precious combo, you can still get them both on the American site and Daphne Guinness will give you some ability to approximate it with Richly Revered plus Red Dwarf. Or maybe you have Offshoot and can do it like that. However……..the Gareth Pugh version is just that next level of awesomeness.

Like Katred was saying, Outrage is the ONE to go for if you can only buy one thing from this collection, because it's sexy, it feels great on the lips; more like a Cremesheen Glass than a standard Lipglass, but thinner and lighter too - not sticky or too jelly feeling, and not so over the top that you can't wear it during the day, but definitely not run of the mill - the green sparkles really show up. It's like Flurry of Fun from To the Beach in that level of noticeability, but the shimmer particles are finer, so it winds up being more sophisticated. I haven't used the Chanel Glossimmers, but I bet this is quite comparable, but WAY COOLER. I didn't back up the glosses from To the Beach and sort of regretted it, even though they were the sort of thing that was better in the summer than the winter. I might have to back Outrage up now. It's a tough call, since it's pricey, but the size and density of the sparkles, plus THE GREEN, and then of course the totally seductive mid-tone plum base color is such a hot combo. I'm still going to have to hold up the stop sign, though, since this is a color that between the greyed out plum and the green sparkle is not going to be so hot on certain skin tones. It may make your skin look a little dead if it's not prepped perfectly if you're an NW. It's expensive enough that I'd say hold off and try it in person unless you know you can handle ultra-grey/green casts against your skin. If you are NC of any darkness, run, don't walk!!!! This is the bomb and basically one of the nicest color glosses I've ever owned over 30+ years. If you can wear Elude, all the better, since it really anchors the lip colors in this collection for me and takes them from "Ok this is interesting" to "HOLD THE DOOR NELLY".

Talking about "stop the presses", Restrict is also the bomb, if you keep searching for the perfect nude like I do. Elude is not absolutely necessary as a backdrop, but it brings out the ultimate beauty of Restrict. If you rock Soft Sable and Double Spin, you will soil your panties over Restrict. This is the best greyed-out nude MAC has done since the 90's and is sexy as F**k. If you went through the 90s and miss those colors or if you are new to this look but attracted by its strange mysterious quality and you are very light skinned, Restrict is a must-buy. This unfortunately is not a pale nude that the deeper skin tones can rock (and I usually hate to act so monolithic about that sort of thing), but it is grayish to the extreme, without even a tinge of pink or yellow. You're gonna get corpse lips quick unless you do well with grey tones, mid-tones (in terms of brightness) and are OK with a slight lightness to the color density (it's not as sheer or glossy as Fervent, but it's a touch less opaque than some other Cremesheens). On the plus side, it's not as drying as average Cremesheens either ( I've worn it for hours today) but it won't last through a meal, so keep that in mind. If you love how you look in Perfect Topping Cremesheen Glass or that extra gorgeous Pure Magnificence Cremesheen Glass from Semi-Precious and always wished you could find that in a lipstick, here you go! In fact, Restrict is very close to Pure Magnificence but with perhaps even a touch less pink or lavender. Innocence Beware looked like poop on me, but Restrict looks amazing, especially with Elude on the face. I'm wearing this combo right now and feel like the Mistress of All Sexy Lips.

If Restrict is a touch too extreme for you, but you still want to rock it, get Vacant lipglass and layer that lovin'. Again, I don't know what she was smoking….Vacant is not sheer. It's got a dense level of violet shimmer that prevents it from reading sheer on the lips, even if the base color is on the sheer side. The shimmer is more finely milled than Spree (which is saying something) and it's about as close to the really opalescent, two-tone purple shimmers of my youth, which I don't think are actually available any longer in any form - they must have used pigments that will give you brain cancer or something back then. It doesn't hit you over the head with the duochrome effect or the shimmering, but it will suddenly present itself in a fat slab of righteousness if you turn your head just so or if the lights suddenly dim before the big kiss. This was one I wasn't going to get, but when I tried it on, I realized I'd be dumb to pass it up and today wearing it with Elude on the face and Restrict underneath, I don't regret the expense in the least, even if I don't think I will necessarily need to back this up. The Restrict/Vacant combo is somewhat dupable if you layer Pleasure Principle or Pure Magnificence over Soft Sable to bring out the purple tone. It's possible similar effects will be achievable with some of the Daphne Guinness combos, but this will still be unique. If you are willing to spend the cash, you'll be able to skip some other things down the road.

Finally, the lashes - words cannot express the gorgeousness. Especially with Elude/Restrict/Vacant and nothing else except some heavy mascara and possibly some liner under the lower lashes. I know I am bold enough to wear them. They're pretty delicate, though. I pried one out of its container and I was feeling pretty tense about handling it. This is the single most high fashion cosmetic product of 2011 on a global scale. Is my hyperbole jacked up enough for you? I might go back and buy out my store and make these my signature look - that's how nuts I am about these lashes. I can't say I've ever seen a more amazing set of false lashes - totally outrageous but at the same time not clownish or drag queen looking. A plain black outfit and the E/R/V super combo and these lashes could be any woman's signature look if she doesn't have a problem being a Cyber-Demoness. I usually like variety, but I'm sorely tempted to just go for it and call it a day for the rest of my makeup life.

I discussed this with my MA - she felt you could get about 10 uses out of a set of these lashes. I haven't owned any false lashes in so many years, I'm not sure if there's a way I'll be able to stretch out my number of uses beyond that. I got an extra set, just in case - omg so amazing. The lashes are hand cut so every pair is different. My store only got 6 pairs in and they generally get large volume for everything since they're the highest volume store in L.A. in terms of sales. If you want them, you better high-tail it over and snag them.
I think $18 is a fantastic price for these outrageous lashes. Go look at Shu Uemura's lash selection. We are talking $36 - $70 for a set of lashes, albeit with rhinestones and made out of feathers.

I'm sorry but I won't post a picture wearing the lashes until I'm actually ready to wear them for a night out, considering now I'm paranoid about how many uses I'm going to get out of them. If anyone has any tips on keeping false lashes in perfect condition, please let me know. If I'm being scared over nothing and can re-use them till the cows come home, then I'll take photos for sure!
They're really good quality and that's a fine price for luxury lashes. I'm surprised they didn't get more in your store.

If you haven't worn lashes for a while then I'd suggest practicing with something less special. This year I had an event and decided to wear lashes after not having used them for a few years. I found it's not quite like riding a bike...they stayed on but I was very uneasy and it caused me some stress getting ready because I'd put a lot of effort into the rest of my makeup and it was the final touch. I just decided I need to wear lashes more often to keep up my skills!

I think you'd generally be wearing these without mascara any so that helps them last longer and the shape isn't one that's likely to get twisted up so that's in favour of longevity as well. I'm sure you can get lots of tips on making them last longer but they won't last until the cows come home:(

I hope you eventually have a very special occasion to wear them and post pictures in full makeup glory!

Liba, did you every get a chance to try out the EL Renutritiv powder (I think that's the correct name) before it was d/c? The finish comes very close to Elude. I just loved the EL powder in "translucent." If I remember correctly, it retailed for over 50 bucks but it was one of the most "moisturizing" powders on the market w/o looking too dry, powdery or matte on the skin. I'm so pleased that Elude gives me the same effect as I ran out of all my EL BU's.
