MAC Art of the Eye Collection (May 2013)

It's the colour ingredients. Powerpoints aren't safe cuz of the formula.
If you look over products, blues and blue-violets are often not lip safe, and red and oranges are often not eye safe. It has to do with the coloring agents, as erine1881 says. It also has to do with how much of a pigment is in the product. Some lip or eye products may have an amount of a potentially hazardous ingredient that is so small it is not considered a danger. But when the colors are intense, due to a lot of the pigment, they are no longer safe.

Yes you're right and that makes sense, but Hi-Def Cyan for example is not safe for the waterline and it's not a red or orange. So the reason is not the colour of the pigments in the pencil and that's why I was wondering.

She was just saying that reds/oranges are almost always non-safe because of the colouring, not that they're the ONLY non-safe colours. It could also be the concentration of the pigments in that particular colour. Whatever the reasoning, it's just not safe for that use.

Yes ok, but before it was explained to me here my first thoughts were it isn't a red orange so why is it not safe. Now I understand it.

I got a chance to see this whole collection yesterday.

OK, Parrot…I see what the big deal is. The iridescent quality is very pretty, although I have to admit that even though it's beautiful and long wearing, my favorite turquoise is still that super bright Electric Cool one from last year. If you prefer a powder shadow, you might as well grab Parrot, but if you don't wear turquoise that often and already have some of the ones that came out, like the one that came with Surf Baby or the Mega Metal one, you may not need this. If you're on the quest for the perfect turquoise, you might want to grab it anyhow, though. I'm a little on the fence, just because I usually only wear this shade for going out, not for daytime.

The orange shadow is a real standout too - it applied on me more brownish that it looks in the pan. It's got a nice smooth matte texture too. Very pigmented. Again, though, it's comparable to the orange shadow from Mega Metal without the sheen, so I personally am probably going to skip it, but it's a good one, for those who are looking for a color like this - it's very flattering and made my green eyes pop.

The bright green shadow is also very high quality for a matte bright green. It's almost the exact color as the bright green that came out a few years ago alongside the Dare To Wear collection - Sassy Grass. It's a teeny bit better formula than Sassy Grass, but Sassy Grass was very good quality already. I'm not going to get it, it's a very close dupe and again, not an everyday color.

The purple shadow felt a bit stiffer than the others, but had a nice sheen. I didn't try it on my eyes. I think people may like it, but it's not super unique, nor are the dark blue or pink shadows. Basically, everything is very high quality for MAC shadow, but you may already have all these colors.

The quads were quite good, since they were all neutral. Very useful. Again, though, nothing super unique. Especially the grey quad, it seemed to me it'd be worth it to wait for the grey quad with the All About Orange collection, since those shades were really warm toned, which is nice for my coloring. This quad here is nice enough, though, since they were shades that anyone could wear well.

I honestly am most excited about the bright blue Opulash, since it's an even nicer version of the one that came out with Wonder Woman, of which I'm almost through with my BUs. The color will definitely show up on dark lashes.

All in all, this seems like a collection that will be great for folks who don't already have a ton of eye shadows or who are extreme eyeshadow hoarders, but there isn't anything to be disappointed about. It's coming out in May, but I didn't actually ask for the exact release date - can you see how underwhelmed I am? I'd rather wait for other things coming out in the summer, even though these are very good quality.

Do you remember the name of the Electric Cool colour? Maybe I already have it.

Helps so much!
I agree with you in regards to the grey quad - I think I will wait for Rainy Season quad from AAO.
I am undecided whether to get the neutral brown quad from AotE or wait and see what we get from Rihanna...hmm. I don't have many MAC shadows so I guess I shouldn't worry too much. I would hate if they reused a shade in a quad further down the road! (I have you carbon tyvm!)
I'm starting to feel more adventurous with eyeshadow colours so I think I will grab Parrot and the orange shade...also the navy maybe.
I wouldn't know what to do with Parrot though lol. I'll have fun making it work!

My MA did an eye look with parrot on the lid, the orange in the crease and the outer v and the reddish brown from the brown quad under the eye, blended with more of the orange. I got a lot of compliments. He was actually quite happy with the way this collection was presented, because you could buy or skip one of the neutral quads and then choose whichever bright color you want individually for a touch of color, rather than typical MAC quads with 3 neutral colors and then one really brilliant one tacked on. Good for folks who want a handy quad or who have all the neutrals they need and don't want to buy a whole quad for one unusual color.

I like the neutral quad but I won't buy it for the two shades I don't already have. Parrot is a must have for me and possibly the matte green. With brown eyes, auburn hair and warm sin, greens are my playground.

Thanks so much for your detailed comments, as always. I have Sassy Grass and Paparazz-she (the orange Mega-Metal you're referring to, I think). Although I don't wear teals all that often, I do have a real weakness for them, so I might end up with Parrot. I already have the previously released quad... I feel like I'm kind of ahead of the game with this collection!

omg, why would you ever want to get rid of that one??? It's so totally gorgeous and bright PLUS, unlike the standard powder shadows, it smooths out my old eyelid texture so well - plus it's super long lasting through plenty of dancing and sweating etc. The only thing Parrot has that Fashion Circuit doesn't is this really pretty, subtle pale green iridescence - it's very subtle, though - good for gals with lots of eyelid real estate, however!

thanks for you review!
makes me feel better for skipping this collection...
i have sassy grass.
too many teals...don't wear them very often, and i do have fashion circuit.
and i skipped parrot and the grey quad the first time they came out...there must have been a reason!
the colours look pretty, but at the end of the day i think i'm covered!

I am getting Parrot...I saw a look someone online did with Parrot on the lids, woodwinked in the crease and lower lashline, club on the outer v, ricepaper for highlight, vex in tearduct and a green fluidline on top lashline and waterline. I will be trying this for sure!

liba, will there be 6 single eyeshadows?

You mentioned Parrot, an orange, a bright green, a purple, a dark blue and a pink eyeshadow.

I can only see 5 in the color story
