For personal use, quite a while. I have paint pots that are older and don't smell and work fine. If they smell, toss them. How long are paintpoints good for? I have had some for many years...
For pro use, I would change them often.
I think throwing out makeup is a personal choice. If its not up to your standards of freshness then that's a good place to determine if you want to keep it or not. Personally, mascara is the only makeup that I constantly replenish cause I am in and out of it. I rotate my paint pots so I am never opening and closing one long enough for it spoil. I also wipe out my makeup every now and then and check for any damage over time. I have to say its rare for me to get rid or something.
I hope I can fine one paint pot of this collection that I can work with. Anything too glittery is a big fat no!
