Split - Barbie: race issues, image issues

I don't see both companies fitting together.
MAC is about "all ages, all sexes all races" and Barbie is a WASP, so how this will ever work together?

Maybe that's because, I'm a 32 year old MAC loving feminist and a Barbie hater ?

I don't think having a Barbie inspired collection is much different from having a Playboy inspired collection, or a Disney one. In fact, it seems like the perfect marriage of the two :p

And I've never understood why feminists hate Barbie so much. Even more difficult for me to understand is why a feminist would hate Barbie but love MAC. Doesn't THE MAN make women wear makeup to disguise their hideousness? Am I missing something?

Not that it's the best idea, but I can understand how it might appeal to an adult audience. Barbie is like the oldest doll that has been sold for the longest time, and a lot of people collect them, a lot of adults. I dont think the collaboration will be bad for MAC, but Barbie needs to do something to pull itself out of the hole that Bratz have dropped it into.

I personally think those Bratz dolls are f'ing disgusting, with their big ass heads and removable feet.

I just thanked every comment that bashed Bratz dolls. Those things are gross and skanky. BRATZ dolls wear more makeup than barbie does or ever did.

I loved my Barbie's friend Theresa doll. SHE WAS THE BEST! lol

Exactly! I think Bratz dolls are turning our little girls into ho's that want to wear too much makeup and sluttly clothes at such a young age. WTF is up with Bratz dolls and their gigantic heads? I mean, that's how anorexic girls look when they get too thin (not making a joke btw), but they do. Their heads get too big for their bodies.

I think Barbie should be the next Icon spokes person for MAC!

Edit: At least Barbie teaches our children that they can grow up and be anything they want: A Doctor, a Vet, a Mom, a Race Car Driver, a Teacher, etc

This has become an interesting thread! Honestly, I'd never heard of these "Bratz" before, so I went and checked out their website. I can't agree with roxybc more.. I mean, how are these better than Barbie? Is the bobble-head, bug-eyed look somehow more attainable than tall and large-breasted?

I personally wouldn't get any of the collections Bratz or Barbie. While I like Bratz more (and I used to play with Barbie dolls), I don't see myself wanting makeup fashioned either of them. They'd have to have some pretty darn good looking colors for me to go near the counter that month.

Off topic: I see alot of people saying that Bratz dolls are trashy but what exactly makes them trashy? Big lips? Cause that's what everyone is trying to achieve these days. Clothes? I see grown women dressed like this. BTW I looked at the site and saw them wearing jeans and cute tops. Maybe this is just because it's the "Fall Collection". I see where everyone else is coming from with the Barbie collection (she achieves everything), but it wasn't until my generation that they finally attempted to make a doll I could identify with (and there weren't alot). I guess this is why I don't identify with either and am not really enthusiastic about this collection. Just MHO.

I can see how you can side with Barbie but to blame little girls turning into "hoes" on Bratz, uh, no. That's a mother's doing. Who buys the makeup and clothes?

As for Bratz dolls, I can't see any positives in a range of dolls that promote ethnic stereotypes (a sociological paper I read recently made mention of the dolls being directly modelled on the twin stereotypes of Latina 'hoochies' and African-American video girls), where the hottest accessory is a tanning bed for the Baby Bratz line (I can't even begin to tell you what's wrong with that) and, as insignificant as it sounds, came with little g-strings/thongs in their boxed outfits. This is all for a line that's marketed to the 4-10 year-old market, remember.
It might be trite and a bit hackneyed, but it still remains that for all her negatives, Barbie at least did something. For all her shopping accessory packs, make-over parties and beach house kits, she was also a student, a doctor, a teacher, an astronaut... Mattel imbued Barbie with aspirations beyond shopping and Ken.

But really, it's all about the bright, bright lipsticks.

Ok, well I didn't know about the whole "thong" issue and I don't condone it. But accessories aside, can anyone really relate more asthetically to a Barbie doll?

I dont think the issue is relating more aesthetically. I dont really care that theres no Asian barbie well I think there might be now but there wasn;t when I was younger. Bratz dolls all sorta look the same too they have big eyes and big lips and I dont really relate to that either.

I think that depends a lot too on the parents' guidance (something you mentioned above). I'm a Latina and I had tons of Barbies as i kid, yet i never aspired to look like her or thought i had to look like her. I guess its because my parents always made me feel proud of who i was and made it clear Barbie was a toy, no more no less.

Those dolls freak me out. I was in a toy store just yesterday and realized how funny those giant lips look. I dont know, I think they look odd and totally warped. Not to mention some of those outfits are totally skanky. I know it's been said before in this thread, but I really think they send some pretty whacked out messages to the younger girls, I don't know who can relate to a toy for 4-10 year olds that can easily look like a porn star with those lips, those outfits, etc...I could go on and on why I think they are trashy but this is about the makeup not the dollss...hahaha...

I grew up a Barbie girl, and I'll stay that way. Can't wait to see what comes of this!!!

Excited!

Ok, lol. So I didn’t see ALL the outfits. So now I’m not a fan of either one. I just still think the whole Barbie collection is not a great idea (for me at least).

Let's remember that little girls don't look at those dolls and see 'sluts' or 'hookers'- that's an adults way of thinking. They see a cute doll that's really popular with all their friends. There are many Bratz that are fully covered and don't wear thongs- but in debates like this they don't get mentioned. IGN listened to some complaints and have made a new line of Bratz for the younger set. They all wear child clothing and their features are toned down. So no one is forcing parents to buy the kind of Bratz pictured above.
