White supremacist 'plot' to assassinate Barack Obama foiled - Telegraph

A neo-Nazi plot to assassinate Barack Obama has been uncovered days before the American presidential election.

US government agents say they have thwarted a plan by two conspirators to kill the White House front-runner and shoot or decapitate 102 black people.

Daniel Cowart, 20, and Paul Schlesselman, 18, were arrested in Tennessee on Wednesday and charged with possession of firearms, threats against a presidential candidate running and conspiring to rob a gun store, the Department of Justice said.

The plot is understood to centre on Tennessee where Martin Luther King was assassinated exactly 40 years ago.

Details of the conspiracy were contained in court records unsealed on Monday by members of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives – America's specialist law enforcement agency.

ATF agents said they disrupted plans by white supremacists to rob a firearms store and attack a predominantly black school.

According to the ATF, the men planned to go on a killing spree across the United States with Mr Obama, the Democratic nominee who is poised to become the country's first black president, as their final target.

Brian Weaks, an ATF agent, told a Memphis court on Monday that the pair had men discussed a "killing spree to include targeting a predominantly African-American school". The ATF said that the two men did not identify the school by name.

He continued: "They further stated that their final act of violence would be to attempt to kill/assassinate presidential candidate Barack Obama," he added, as the two men appeared before the federal court.

Cowart, from Bells, Tennessee, and Schlesselman, from Arkansas, met on the Internet a month ago and have "very strong beliefs and views regarding 'White Power' and 'Skinhead' views," Mr Weaks told the court.

He said that Cowart had bought one rifle and stockpiled two handguns, both stolen from his grandfather. They planned to steal another high-powered rifle from a gun store in Jackson, Tennessee, as well as a series of robberies to finance their bloody actions.

"Schlesselman stated that they planned to drive their vehicles as fast as they could toward Obama shooting at him from the windows.”

"Both individuals stated they would dress in all white tuxedos and wear top hats during the assassination attempt. Both individuals further stated they knew they would and were willing to die during this attempt."

Jim Cavanaugh, special agent in charge of the Nashville field office of the ATF said the two skinheads planned to shoot 88 black people and decapitate another 14. The numbers 88 and 14 are held to be symbolic by white supremacists and relate to nationalist leader David Lane as well as Adolf Hitler.

Details of the alleged plot emerged just before Mr Obama arrived in Pittsburgh for a campaign rally after an earlier visit to Canton, Ohio.

Advisers remained tight lipped but said there were no plans for the candidate to make any reference to the ATF's announcement.

It was not known how detailed the alleged plot was, how far advanced it was or how feasible the plan. Agents said that the two men did not identify the school by name.

"They said that would be their last, final act – that they would attempt to kill Sen Obama," said Mr Cavanaugh. "They didn't believe they would be able to do it, but that they would get killed trying."

In August, three men with suspected links to white supremacist groups were arrested with rifles and a telescopic sight amid fears of a plot to assassinate Mr Obama during the Democratic convention.

It was reported that one of the suspects had told authorities they were "going to shoot Obama from a high vantage point using a ... rifle ... sighted at 750 yards". When one of the suspects "was directly asked if they had come to Denver to kill Obama", a police source said, "He responded in the affirmative".

But there were no charges in connection with any assassination plot and the authorities later indicated that the men were drug addicts and petty criminals who had no plans to kill anyone.

The civil rights leader Dr Martin Luther King, was assassinated in the southern US city of Memphis, Tennessee, in 1968 where he was to lead a march of sanitation workers protesting against low wages and poor working conditions

He was shot in the neck as he stood on a hotel balcony and died in hospital soon afterwards.

Five years earlier, John F Kennedy was hit in the head and throat when three shots were fired at his open-topped car in Dallas, Texas.

The numbers 88 and 14 are significant to white supremacists because of the American white nationalist leader, David Lane, who died while serving a 190-year prison sentence for murder, racketeering, and conspiracy in May last year.

During his incarceration he wrote an essay entitled '88 precepts' in which he put forward his plan for establishing a white society. The essay is used by white supremacist groups as the basis of their beliefs. Lane's '88 precepts' was an expansion on his 14 words which he said summed up his views. Lane said: "We must secure the existence of our people and a future for White children." He added that this was necessary "because the beauty of the White Aryan woman must not perish from the earth".

It is also thought that the number 88 is also used by white supremacists to represent "Heil Hitler", because "H" is the eight letter of the alphabet.

Whenever I'd have conversations with people about the possibility of Obama being assassinated, I knew it was actually quite realistic.
I'd joke about him having to ride in a Pope-mobile like vehicle for protection and how deja vu this was to JFK.

But for some reason, reading this made my gut churn. People are fucked up sometimes.

The sad thing is..I can't say that I am surprised....wish I could act shocked...But unfortunately....Most people that are honest with themselves knew this would happen. The really sad and heart wrenching part is that this is probably only the beginning of worse attempts to come. Fighting for people's rights sometimes put your own life in harms way. Especially, when you have a big voice and people see it is being listened to. The only way they feel they can stop people from listening is by stopping the person who is talking by whatever means possible.
I just keep praying that God will keep him and his family safe.
This is the world as we know it...Some people are just cruel and have no regard to human life. Deep seeded racism still exists and it always will.

I'm not surprised, sorry to say. I hope if he wins that they really do a good job on security; I imagine there will be more plots against Obama than most people.

As sad as it makes me, I'm not the least bit surprised; and this is part of the reason why I am still undecided on whether I will vote or not.

I can't stop feeling like I'm helping send a sheep to slaughter.

I also can't help but laugh at the stupidity of "The Aryan Nation". They don't know what's in store for them if they should succeed.

This isn't the first plot at Obama's assassination...He is for sure a brave man. It is disturbing that people still have this sort of mentality. It is really sad that these boys come from a very poor area and one didn't even finish high school. Living in a rural 66% black neighborhood surrounded by poverty and with no education, I am sure has something to do with their hatred of black people. I guess people feel like they have to blame somebody for their problems.

I really don't see how some people can say racism is done and over with, when we see these real consequences every day.

I dont believe this is the first plot to assassinate that had been foiled. I remember reading about 2 other hair brain schemes. Lucky they all seemed to be hatched by people too stupid to know how to tie their shoes, let alone assassinate barack.
I must say, that i desperately hope he wins... but im so scared that one day the attempts will become a reality.

This really gets to me. How can people live their lives full of so much anger and hatred? It is such a poisonous way to exist. You forfeit your happiness just so you can hate.

What a couple of p*ssies. Seriously. It's scary that something like this is actually being planned out, although like Mabelle posted above, I doubt these two morons' intelligence to adequately pull off a home invasion much less get past Secret Service "driving as fast as they can, shooting through the car window" as they so tactfully planned it out.

(Here is the full affidavit of complaint filed against them: Skinheads In Obama Assassination Plot - October 27, 2008 )

Not trying to undermine the possibility of Obama having assassination attempts on him, which scares and saddens me, but these 2 just seem like a couple of douchebag skinheads who met on some nazi forum online and wanted notoriety. Okay - effing news flash - THERE IS NO 'SUPERIOR' RACE! There will NEVER be a 'pure, white, aryan' race so just get the f_ck over it already!

Your stupid asses would be better off if Obama won anyhow, but you're too strung out on meth to do anything but spew hate and ignorant rhetoric. Ugh.. not wasting any more time or brain energy trying to even begin to understand these scumbags. I hope they both rot in hell. That is all.

I know. Can you believe deep-seated racism like this still exists?
I don't want to believe this!
I have been praying for Senator Obama
and his beautiful wife and children every Day.
I keep asking my husband, "Does he wear a bullet-proof vest? How can he protect his head? What about his beautiful family?"

My Heart breaks.

I never wanted to believe in pure evil, but I have come to believe
it exists.

Fear may arouse the evil, but the evil was already growing,
like a cancer,
in those guys' heads, since they began to learn it at birth.

You don't understand it because you are not xenophobic...
and you are not evil.

xenophobia definition | Dictionary.com

An unreasonable fear, distrust, or hatred of strangers, foreigners, or anything perceived as foreign or different.

Oh, yes. You are so right.
We see this concept throughout History.

Please let us see History made anew, with
Triumph of Greatness over ignorant, evil oppression.

I know. It's terrifying.

All i can think of is to hope all of us send our Hearts to this Truly Great Man, and our prayers, in whatever way we each think or pray.
I don't mean prayer has to be of a traditionally religious kind,
as prayer comes in so many forms.
I really believe we can send him strength and courage.

Senator Barack Obama defines History.
He is high on the list of the Greatest and Bravest People of our Time.

I would not want anything evil to happen to his opponent, either...or to his family.....nor to anyone.

You are soo right, Tish. What a horrid truth.

We must combat the ism's, all of them, by making the "big voice" even bigger...

I think even when we post about it, every time we discuss it, we are working on making the fight for people's rights Voice Bigger.

Dare to Hope. I believe racism will *not* go on forever.

I read this article and felt sick. This is ridiculous i have no words. Hate only frays the fabric of civilization.

What makes it worse is the 88 and 14 they planned to kill at local schools, knowing they wouldn't make it to Obama, but they would die trying. Its times like these that truly make the south look bad and I hate it. This is honestly close to home for me and i hope the rest of the country realize that its not typical here.

I'm am truly thankful for the work done by the law enforcement and FBI. I hope they keep up the good work.

The ignorance and hate that still resides in this country amazes me. I can't stand all of the backwoods, racists idiots who believe all kinds of crazy bullshit about Obama (he's a Muslim ant-Christ, blah, blah) without backing up their information. I've seen so many people post bulletins on myspace with straight out lies on Obama that link to snopes.com, and if they would have taken the time to actually visit snopes.com, they'd actually see that the information they are spreading around is false (and making them look like a complete idiot). Our nation has come to far without being brought back by some ignorant assholes who won't even take the time to do a google search. And I don't even want to get started on white supremacist groups... There's really no hope for them. Ugh.

i agree with you on so many levels. my husband and i talk about the possibility of an assassination attempt and you are right people don't know what is in store if this comes to light. there would be so much civil unrest-and not just from black folks but from all folks who are sick and tired of being sick and tired.

!!!! woooheee boy they are going to have fun with him in lock up. If he felt insecure before he will definitely feel more so after his stay. How anyone can pose with a gun like that and still look like a pansy is beyond me! That is his problem folks... not Obama. Poor little boy was blessed with feminine features and so badly wanted to be tough.
